The monastic room

The franciscan chamber accessed by a priavate small terrace from which you can admire a beautiful view of Sasso Barisano. You will notice two crosses engraved on the tufa in the external wall. These crosses are the symbol of the monastic community presence. The room has a direct acces to the relaxing area and to the excludsive hypogeum. The minimal and stylish atmosphere of the franciscan chamber will you bring in the heart of the Materan culture. This chamber his equipped with a double bed, wi-fi, tv led, private bathroom and a kitchen area, and has a private quite small terrace where enjoy the true Sassi mood. This room is dedicate to the monastic culture that influenced the monasticism of the region, especially his artistc aspect of the cave churches.

The monastic communities

The Residence is named after an ancient church built in honour of Saint Gennaro near this construction.  This sites were inhabited by franciscan friars and other monks. Between the VIII and the XIV century Matera was a centre of attraction for many monastic communities including some byzantine communities. These cultural contaminations influenced the monasticism of this  region, especially his artistc aspect: The cave churches.
